The further appeal of any of these floral wines is that they will effortlessly complement a variety of vernal dishes. I’m picturing ingredients like sweet peas, wild fennel, and arugula. Whole roasted fish loaded with fresh herbs atop fragrant saffron rice, or baby carrots with a soft-poached egg on top... the possibilities are endless.

Spring has officially sprung, and it feels impossible not to get excited about the simple pleasures that brings: the local green market returning to town, noisy warblers at dawn, and the liberating sensation of perfectly clear blue skies above. Most delightful, in its sheer ability to inspire optimism, is the hopeful sight and rousing scent of barren trees beginning to bloom and plots of grass sprouting with pastels, seemingly overnight! Spring is most definitely in the air, and it has me thinking, what about in the glass?
Inspired by this fleeting time of year, defined by an abundance of flourishing flowers, we’ve put together a sampler of wines with aromatic bouquets that could easily be qualified by their likeness to a variety of florals. Included are bright, light reds from Alex Foillard and Cédric Chignard in the Beaujolais that, when served with a chill, emit the prettiest scent of rose petal and peony. Darker reds from both Belles-Graves in Bordeaux, and a Syrah-Grenache blend from David Gallety, have earthier perfumes of violet, with a touch of warm, wild lavender on the latter. In the way of Italian whites, the Coda di Volpe from Campania will provoke reverie with its transportive aroma of wildflower and golden mimosa, while the Pugliese “Rampone” offers a stimulating study of Minutolo: a perfumed variety that’s tangy and complex with unmistakable notes of orange blossom and honeysuckle.

Before it’s too late, allow this transitory season and corresponding collection, to invigorate and uplift!
