Guy “Max” Breton, who has been making wine in Villié-Morgon since the late ’80s, is at the peak of his powers, drawing on decades of experience in combination with a handful of new appellations for inspiration. For the first time in sampler history, we’re offering an entire six-pack of purely Breton wines, made from pure Gamay, delivering pure plaisir. Here is your opportunity to spend time with a talented artist, to bask in the hedonistic pleasure that wine has to offer, and to get to know one of Beaujolais’ all-time greats across a variety of crus within a single vintage.
Let’s invoke the wisdom of Jules Chauvet, the original natural wine enthusiast who influenced Max and the likes of Marcel Lapierre and Jean Foillard, and recall that the components that make a wine qualitative—style, structure, rhythm—can’t possibly be quantified by physical-chemical analysis. Therefore, the only tried-and-true method to appreciate a wine’s artistic beauty is to call upon our innate sense of sight, taste and smell. Allons-y!

Sampler Includes:

2019 Beaujolais-Villages “Cuvée Marylou”
Named for Max’s daughter, this bottling is your gateway Guy Breton. It’s a village wine perfect for chilling down and loosening up.

2019 Régnié
Max’s slightly elevated, gently sloped parcel of Régnié vines is level with his Morgon and Chiroubles crus. But aged up to 90 years old, vines grown on granite and schist make for a wine that’s so delicately perfumed, he calls it his “Petit Pinot.”

2019 Chiroubles “Cuvée Léa”
Yields are tiny in this high-altitude parcel of lieu-dit Javernand, where soil is sandy and littered with decomposed schist. Seventy-year-old vines produce concentrated grapes, which in a richer vintage like 2019, transform into a voluminous cru Beaujolais that’s at once floral and bright, with potential to blossom over time.

2019 Morgon “Vieilles Vignes”
What could be more iconic than an irreproachable Morgon made by a member of the Gang of Four? This is Max’s quintessential cuvée, perfect in every way, and the one that will hold your heart and make you swoon. To know it is to love it, no technical details necessary.

2019 Côte de Brouilly
You’ll find Max’s vineyard on the north side of the Mont Brouilly near Nicole Chanrion’s parcels. Though the vines are over 60 years old, and have a natural tendency towards stiff tannins, Max manages to keep them silky and nimble. Aromas of tart fruit, violet, and stone all work in harmony.

2019 Fleurie
The most recent cru to join the line-up, and Max’s inaugural vintage. The soil is so stony in lieu-dit Les Garants that the finished wine is surprisingly powerful—bold and architectural. Try not to mistake it for a Côtes du Rhône, but do age it if you love older Beaujolais.

Inspiring Thirst

A good doctor prescribed the wine of Nuits-Saint-Georges to the Sun King, Louis XIV, when he suffered an unknown maladie. When the king’s health was restored the tasty remedy enjoyed a vogue at court. Lord, send me a doctor like that!
