Biodynamic describes a method of farming that treats the vineyard ecosystem as a whole living being. It is based on a philosophy developed in 1924 by Austrian scientist Rudolf Steiner in response to the industrialization of farming sweeping across Europe at the time. It became one of the first recognized naturalist schools of farming, combining ancient agricultural know-how with science, astrology, and a bit of mysticism. Biodynamics has taken a stronghold on the world of wine, with many vignerons now farming their vineyards in adherence to its principles.
Two main factors make biodynamic farming distinctly different from organic farming. The first is the use of a complex system of herbal sprays and composting techniques, known as “preparations.” The second is the timing of operations in the vineyard and cellar, strictly regulated by the movements of the spheres. Biodynamic producers follow lunar and cosmic patterns to determine when to prune, rack, bottle, and perform other actions necessary to viticulture and winemaking.
Soil is considered a living organism with an “immune system” responsible for maintaining its health. Pesticides and herbicides are banned; instead, homeopathic remedies such as plant- and mineral-based “tisanes” nurture and protect the vines from pest and disease.
Certain organizations, such as Demeter and Biodyvin, provide official certification to farmers who adhere to the strict guidelines of biodynamic farming. Other growers choose to borrow various elements, applying only the principles they deem most suitable to their vineyards on a case-by-case basis.
Many of the vignerons we work with have embraced biodynamics, so we’ve put together a sampler of wines that communicate this philosophy at its very best. There is a vibrancy to each selection, made by celebrated pioneers including Arretxea in Basque country, Loire legends like Thierry Germain and the Bretons, and more recent converts such as Davide Vignato in the Veneto. Proponents of biodynamics insist that in addition to sustainability, it benefits the planet and creates a healthier work environment, but crucially, they are also convinced by one essential truth: what’s in the glass.
