“Torrette” is the regional designation referring to wines made from certain villages in the Valle d’Aosta principally from the Petit Rouge grape (70% minimum). Maurizio blends in 10% of the local Mayolet grape for extra freshness and finesse. The resulting wine has a deep and dark yet blazing bright color, as if it had been made from pressed wild berries. True to the region, it has a slightly sweet and creamy edge and exuberant, piquant fruit, both peppery and floral throughout. It is an incredibly consistent wine from Maurizio: I can’t remember a vintage that wasn’t love at first sight, thanks to his high-altitude granite terraces facing southeast and catching the rising sun. As you might expect, the local Fontina cheese makes a sublime pairing!

About The Producer

Château Feuillet

If Maurizio Fiorano became a vineyard owner by chance, he was lucky in the placement of his plots—he will humbly tell you that it’s not hard to make good wine here. The vines sit in shallow sandy soil, but their feet wriggle into crevices in the solid granite bedrock. The vineyards are planted on an ancient riverbed, where the Dora Baltea River cut through, creating the current river valley and leaving behind mineral deposits that the wines happily lap up. The trump card, however, may be high altitude and diurnal temperature shifts providing long hours of gentle sunlight. This gives the grapes a long, slow ripening season that in turn offers red wines with the heft of a sunny climate that are still refreshing and light.

Raised in stainless steel, Moscato produces aromas that are fiercely locked into this bottling. Honeyed, yet bone-dry, it has a hint of chestnut and would be as charming for an apéritif as with a cheese or dessert course.

2022 Valle d’Aosta Traminer Aromatico  $35
Expressive and pedigreed Feuillet’s Traminer might be the white Burgundy equivalent of the bunch. It spends some time on its lees, giving it a rounder mouthfeel. Pair it with fattier fish or slices of salty speck.
